Teenage pregnancies have skyrocketed in various parts of the country, notably the Savanna region, Bono East region, and Ashanti region, according to research by UNICEF Ghana.
According to the research, one of the main variables that led to early sex among adolescents was their exposure to social media.
At a symposium on “Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health Services in Ghana”, Ashanti Regional Director of Health, Dr Emmanuel Tinkorang stated social media has an effect on the rise in teenage pregnancies in such areas
He cautioned social media users to be circumspect in what they are exposed to.
He reaffirmed that due to public stigmatization, which has hindered the sexually active group from obtaining family planning services, regular patronage of family planning has decreased.
Additionally, he noted that certain articles of the Constitution and institutional bylaws prohibit the health service from offering family planning to teenagers which is a source of concern.
