Expansion work on the Psychiatric Unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital has taken a slow pace and authorities of the Unit have expressed concern about its impact on quality health care for patients of the Unit.

The project was started in November 2022 and was to be completed within one year but the project is around 50 percent completion raising eyebrows of meeting the construction timelines.

The expansion of the unit from an 11-bed ward to about 40 beds is to help admit more patients from about eight regions of the country.

The head of the Psychiatric Unit of KATH Dr. Ruth Owusu Antwi appealed to the management of the hospital to call the contractor to book to expedite action on completing the project.

“The temporal place given to us by the management is not spacious to accommodate both the staff and the patients. Patients find it too difficult to share their privacy with the staff, thinking somebody might hear them”.

The Ashanti regional women’s fellowship of the ICGC as part of its annual women’s conference has donated some items to patients of the Psychiatric Unit.
