ASAWASE DISTURBANCE: POLICE ASSURES FAMILY OF JUSTICE

The Ashanti regional police command has commenced an investigation into circumstances that led to the death of a resident of Asawase Gorro.

Salahudeen died shortly after he was arrested in a police swoop operation meters away from his home on Sunday, July 23.

The family of the deceased claimed that the police manhandled their relative and left him to die.

Friends and relatives of Salahudeen didn’t know he won’t return home alive when he stepped out to buy groundnut in his vicinity in the early hours of Sunday.

The 34-year-old’s life was taken when he got caught up in a police swoop operation.

An autopsy report stated the cause of death as splenic rupture, blood in the abdominal organ, and blunt force trauma, that is injury of the body by forceful impact or physical attack.

Family and friends are accusing the police of Salahu’s death.

Some irate youth of Asawase attacked the Asawase police station in retaliation for alleged police brutality.

The youth accused the police of manhandling their friend, leading to his death.

They mobilised themselves, marched to the police station, and pelted stones at the officers around on Sunday evening.

Assemblymember of the Asawase West electoral area, Gideon Okai, confirmed the incident.

“I heard some noise, and when I came out, I saw a group of young men throwing stones at the police station. So I called the airport police commander to deploy more officers to come and maintain law and order. You can see a lot of damage when you enter the police station. The louvre blades, meter, and other items have been vandalized. The youth are accusing the police of killing their friend, but the police have denied that, “he said.

But with the deployment of the reinforcement team, calm was restored.

The leadership of the community have pleaded with the angry youth to calm down as the regional police command has assured them of a thorough investigation into the matter.

The deceased has since been buried in accordance with Islamic rites.
