Asantehene Destools Apatrapahemaa Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, has destooled the Apatrapahemaa, Nana Akyaa Panin III.
It comes after she was revealed to be a non-royal, making her illegitimate for the position she holds.
This marks the end of her 24-year reign.
Her destoolment took place on January 12, 2026, when she stood before His Majesty to lay claim to the Bosom Prah Kumaa Stool as part of Apatrapa.
While her evidence and claim to the Bosom Prah Kumaa Stool were rejected as baseless, her lineage was laid bare, exposing her illegitimacy to the Apatrapa Stool.
Bosom Prah Kumaa Stool
In her claims, she posited that the Bosom Prah Kumaa Stool was hers, fiercely contesting the family of the first chief to ascend the stool – Nana Kwafo.
Represented by one Ama Agyeiwaa, the family of Kwafo stated that the current occupant of the Apatrapa female stool is not related by blood, as her mother joined them as a caretaker.
She said that in the process of time, their stool became vacant; however, the lack of a male to succeed paved the way for it to divert from the home.
That notwithstanding, she said the case was resolved multiple times, with all the outcomes favouring their side. The most recent of them, she said, came about 20 years ago.
Otumfuo, in his verdict, stated that Apatrapa has no links or relations to the Bosom Prah Kumaa Stool.
Falling on historical antecedents, Otumfuo outlined the lineage of the stool, which excluded the mother of the current queen.
Apatrapa Stool
About the Apatrapa stool, Otumfuo gave audience to one Maame Pomaa, who has long contested the legitimacy of the queen to the stool.
According to her, all attempts to reclaim her family’s possession were hampered by the Queen with the support of the late Akyempimhene. She furthered that all other family members had been bought by the queen.
In addition, she said she had been beaten up in an attempt to be silenced and discouraged from pursuing the issues of the stool.
After hearing this, Otumfuo traced the bloodline of the stool’s first occupant, which excluded the queen.
She was immediately destooled, having her traditional footwear publicly removed before the private court at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.
Following this, His Majesty directed Maame Pomaa to find a suitable person to ascend the stool, entrusting her with the affairs of the stool in the interim.
