W/R:Today, January 20th, marks one year of the Appiatse disaster

Survivors of the Appiatse disaster say they are still traumatized by the incident which hit the community about a year ago.

About sixteen lives have so far been lost with others still recovering from injuries and several properties destroyed.

As Friday 20th January 2023, marks, the one year commemoration.

Grieving and emotions heralded the vigil night at Appiatse as survivors shed tears over the loss of family members and friends who lost their lives in the explosion which happened exactly a year ago.

They also lit a candle in memory of the departed Residents.

The chief of Prestea hemang, Nana Nteboa Pra l has expressed disappointment at the absence of members of the Appiatse support fund committee at a ceremony to commemorate the Appiatse disaster.

Emotions were very high as residents broke down upon reaching the old Appiatse site.
16 wreaths and photographs of the deceased had been lined up at the exact spot where the blast occurred.
At exactly 12 midday an alarm was sounded to signify the time when the explosion happened.

Prayers were offered for the souls of the departed after which the residents were educated on safety practices.

The Chief of Prestea Hemang, Nana Nteboa Pra who advocated for the inclusion of safety in our educational curriculum was not enthused about the absence of members of the Appiatse support fund committee and the slow progress of work at the site.

At the grave site, some who were overwhelmed with grief had to be carried away. Mother of 15 month old Ella Baidoo, the youngest among those who died, had this to say.

Prayers were then offered at the grave yard for the departed while the wreath were laid on the tombs.

16 persons lost their lives through the disaster, with about 496 others having various degrees of injuries.

20 individuals are still on the injury list a year on while 2 are bedridden with 8 individuals still having metal particles in their bodies currently.

Present at the ceremony were traditional leaders, the clergy, among others.
