The Trades Union Congress (TUC) and the Public Utility Workers’ Union of Ghana (PUWU) are pushing back against government plans to privatise the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo).
The Trades Union Congress and the Public Utility Workers’ Union of Ghana say recent revenue gains at the Electricity Company of Ghana prove the utility can be turned around without being privatised.
Addressing a press conference in collaboration with PUWU, the General Secretary of the TUC, Joshua Ansah, pointed to the results of a six-month turnaround programme implemented between July and December 2025.
According to the unions, ECG’s average monthly revenue increased from about Ghc 900 million to approximately Ghc 1.7 billion, representing nearly a ninety per cent rise within six months.
The unions say the improvement shows that revenue leakages can be plugged and efficiency improved through internal reforms, rather than handing the company over to private operators.
The unions say the revenue gains have already had positive effects across the power sector, including more regular payments to power producers and improved stability in electricity supply.
They explain that the turnaround was achieved through collaboration among workers, management, and the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, with revenue mobilisation as the key focus.
TUC and PUWU argue that the renewed push for privatisation ignores this progress and risks dismantling a system that is beginning to work.
They also cite improvements at NEDCo, where losses have reportedly reduced by about eight percentage points over the past year.
The unions are therefore calling for an immediate pause in all privatisation-related processes and are demanding an extension of the current turnaround programme, with stronger oversight and clearer accountability for management.
They insist that ECG can deliver reliable and affordable electricity under public ownership if given the right support.
