Togbe Afede XIV, the Agbogbomefia of Asogli State, has donated an amount of 100,000 cedis to the three Tongu Constituencies namely South Tongu, North Tongu, and Central Tongu in the Volta Region to aid relief efforts as a result of flooding from the Akosombo Dam spillage.

The Ghc100,000 cheque was received by MP for Central Tongu Alexander Hottordze And South Tongu Hon. Kobena Mensah Woyome.

The Agbogbomefia accompanied by some chiefs and queens of the Asogli State donated after visiting affected communities in the lower Volta Region and said he had been impressed with the resilience of the communities amidst the crisis.

He added that as people with a common ancestry, the Asogli State considered the support very crucial.

“We are all one people from Notsie and this is a problem for us all. Our lives are inextricably linked and we want to encourage you that you have brothers in Asogli”.

About ten districts sharing the Volta downstream were affected by spillage from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams and an estimated 26,000 had been displaced with the three Tongu Districts among the hardest hit.

Togbe Afede said the flood devastation was avoidable, as it could have been a gradual spillage to prevent the unfathomable damage to livelihoods and properties.

“VRA cannot escape from wrongdoing at the dam. People lost their livelihoods, jobs, etc, and whoever deserves blame should be blamed,” he stated.

He praised the efforts by corporate society and others towards providing the needed relief and said more entities should consider the disaster and endeavor to support it.

MPs for Central, and North Tongu, who received the donation, thanked Togbe Afede for the support, saying it would go a long way to support all.

Togbui Kwasinyi Kakaklolo Agyeman IV, Chief of Adidome, said, “We on the lower Volta sacrificed for the electrification of Ghana and the government should establish a proper disaster management fund.

The traditional ruler further called for donations to be properly structured to benefit all, and also called for chiefs to stand united through the crisis.
