Despite health personnel’s best efforts to raise awareness and campaign against the dangers of tuberculosis diseases in the Ashanti region, the number of cases continues to rise.
The Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG) aims to end the global tuberculosis epidemic by 2030, with targets including reducing TB incidence by 80% and death by 90%.
The Ashanti regional director of health services, Dr Fred Adomako-Boateng has expressed deep concerns about the surge of tuberculosis cases in the region.
He stated that in 2023 the region recorded 131 cases, but in 2024, the number increased to 3239, which was a very concerning situation.
He urged all stakeholders to invest more resources to assist duty barriers in stopping the spread and eliminating diseases.
As today marks World Tuberculosis Day, the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate, in collaboration with the Asokore Mampong Municipal Health Directorate, embarks on a TB awareness campaign and screening exercise for residents of Sepe-Timpo community suburb of Asokore Mampong Municipality.
The theme for 2025 World TB Day, “Yes! We Can End TB: Commit, Invest, Deliver.”
He reiterated that the number of children with tuberculosis is increasing.
Dr. Fred Adomako-Boateng stated that the targets set for children with tuberculosis prevalence were not met due to insufficient effort by health personnel.
The directorate estimated a target of over 300 cases of tuberculosis in children in 2024, but only 204 were recorded, falling short of their goal.
He urged health personnel to double their efforts in contact tracing.
