Sekyere Afram Plains: Completed E-Block left to rot

We continue with our series of abandoned E-blocks across the country, and today, we look at how one of the completed community day school projects in Sekyere Afram Plains of the Ashanti region has been left in the bush for almost eight years after completion.

Some junior high school graduates and parents in the district have expressed their disappointment over what they claim to be unjustified delays in making the facility operational.

With no single senior high school in the Sekyere Afram Plains district, the intention to establish this community day school project came with loads of excitement to residents.

The facility was ready for use in 2017 but for a day school, the distance to the school was a concern to local authorities.

Though fully furnished, the school block was left unused for years.

In 2020, the Ministry of Education awarded a contract for the construction of a dormitory block to provide accommodation for students to complement the E-block project.

At 60 percent, work halted owing to financial constraints.

Both the E-block and the dormitory have currently been left in the bush.

For most junior high school graduates in the area, their dream of enrolling in school hangs in the balance.

While most of the ceiling for the school is falling apart, information gathered indicates that the furniture keeps disappearing one after the other.

Residents and students are not happy with the development.

Meanwhile, the district chief executive says the minister of education has given assurance that the E-block will be operationalised by September 2024.

The only thing remaining, according to the assembly, is power, of which steps have been taken to extend electricity in the area.
