Poor standards of building materials and lack of supervision are major contributors of building collapse in Ghana – IMFA

President of the Ghana Chapter of the International Facility Management Association Sampson Opare Agyemang has attributed the collapse of buildings in Ghana to poor standards of building materials.

He also attributes the situation to a lack of supervision by relevant agencies.

Seven-storey buildings have collapsed within a period of four days in different parts of the country. The latest of such tragic incidents is the collapse of a three-storey building used as a church facility at Botianor in Accra on Tuesday, 9th May 2023.

This development has attracted national attention with various stakeholders sharing their sentiments about the turn of events.

The latest to comment on this development is the Ghana Chapter of the International Facility Management Association.

The Association has attributed the collapse of buildings in the country to a lack of supervision and the poor standard of building materials.

The president of the Ghana Chapter of the International Facility Management Association, Sampson Opare Agyemang has noted that even though climate change is a contributing factor but the Ghana Standard Authority should take an interest in the quality of building materials.

He also charged Metropolitan Municipal District Assemblies to undertake the necessary checks before issuing building permits and to supervise construction activities in their various assemblies.

He revealed the engagement of facility managers can help detect what he described as “sick buildings” for timely interventions to be taken before any disaster occurs.

Vice Dean of the Faculty of Built Environment at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Prof. Emmanuel Adinyira called for a collaboration between government and academia in order to bring a lasting solution to the issue.

The Ghana Chapter of the International Facility Management Association marked this year’s World Facility Managers Day in Kumasi.
