Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee will in the coming days begin a probe into the killing of some five suspected land guards following an anti-robbery and landguard operation in Bortianor, a suburb of Accra.

The Member of Parliament for Ngleshie Bortianor, Sylvester Tetteh reading a statement on the floor of Parliament noted that the incident has brought uneasy calm to the community as traditional rulers and the people of Bortianor have rejected the report by the police.

He, therefore, called on Parliament to institute an inquiry to ascertain the grounds of the incident and help restore calm to the Bortianor community.

Also speaking on the floor of the house, Ranking member for the Committee on Defence and Interior, James Agalga pointed out that the killing of suspects has become rampant and that the police in the Bortianor incident should have apprehended the suspects and made them face the law rather than shooting. Hence the need for the enquiry to provide the bases for the police’s action.

The Minority Chief Whip John Ahmed Ibrahim wants Parliament to also extend the responsibility of the enquiry to the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources since land guards were involved in the incident. He says the involvement of the lands ministry will help address land guard issues across the country.

Meanwhile, the Majority Chief Whip Frank Annor-Dompreh also charged the Ghana Police Service moving forward to develop strategies for picking intelligence to avoid killing suspects.

The Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Andrew Amoako Asiamah, has assigned the Defence and Interior Committee to conduct an investigation into the killing of the five individual suspected land guards and provide a report by the end of the month.
