Huge furniture deficit in the North East Region has been identified as a major cause of poor education at the basic school level in the North East Region.

Majority of the pupils from kindergarten to junior high school in the region have been compelled to sit or lie on their bellies to write.

Ghana’s strategic Education Plan 2018-2030 seeks to improve quality education for all.

Despite government devoting substantial resources to the education sector in recent years, there still remain several challenges.

In the North east region, several Pupils in basic schools are suffering the brunt of inadequate and school furniture. The situation looks dire in rural schools across the region.

A visit to the Bintiri E/A primary school in the East Mamprusi Municipalities saw majority of the pupils sitting on the bare floor .

Head teacher of the school Ibrahim Abdallah laments the situation is affecting teaching and learning

Data from the Ghana Statistical Service for the 2021 population and housing census reveal, About 1.2 million children are not in schooL.

According to a recent assessment of the educational sector budget for 2022 by SEND GHANA, an estimated 3.5 billion cedis is still required to fix the sector’s infrastructure gap.

An estimated 5, 403 schools across the country are still in critical need of a facelift.

Goal 4 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

Target 4.2 of this goal, is to ensure that all girls and boys complete free, equitable and quality primary and secondary education leading to relevant and effective learning outcomes by 2030.
