The Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, the Ghana Commission for UNESCO and UNESCO Accra Office,  launched the UNESCO Culture- 2030 Indicators project in May,2025.

This milestone was a significant step towards incorporating culture into the country’s sustainable development goals agenda, to thrive culture more effectively with data.

The UNESCO Culture|2030 Indicators Framework provides countries with the tools they need to assess culture’s contributions to economic, social, and environmental goals.

Ghana’s adoption of this framework affirms its regional leadership role in integrating culture into evidence-based development planning and policy.

In terms of project rollout for sustainability, the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts has begun piloting the UNESCO Culturel2025 Indicator with stakeholders in select regions.

The Ministry began the first stakeholder engagement in Greater Accra and then proceeded to Kumasi, the capital city of the Ashanti region, to brainstorm Ghanaians about the need for the UNESCO Culturel2025 Indicators Project.

The workshop schedule for two days, August 13-14, 2025..

The stakeholders engagement workshop emphasized the importance of integrating culture into sustainable development plans and highlighted its contribution to multiple SDGs, particularly SDGs 4, 5, 8, 11, and 16.

The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, and UNESCO are working together to implement the UNESCO Culture|2030 Indicators at the city level in Kumasi.

The European Union’s generous financial contribution makes the implementation possible through a project titled “Advancing evidence-based policies and actions, and supporting policy making to enhance the contribution of creative sectors and industries to sustainable development”.

The workshop invited participants from various Departments, Agencies, and Organizations in the Kumasi Region to participate in a series of exercises designed to support the framework’s implementation in Kumasi while also improving local capacity for measuring and monitoring the culture sector.

The key objectives are to introduce stakeholders to the Culture|2030 Indicators framework, including its objectives, structure, and methodology.

Highlight the importance of culture in sustainable development by providing clear, data-driven insights.

To supplement global Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) monitoring, provide thematic indicators that connect culture to multiple SDG targets.

This will help UNESCO member states interpret and report on how cultural policies align with SDG implementation and UNESCO culture conventions.

To strengthen local capacity in culture-related data collection and analysis, and to engage stakeholders in dialogue on cultural statistics and policy development.
