The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has taken firm action against commercial drivers who have defied its directive to charge approved transportation fares.

In a special exercise conducted by the KMA’s Transport Task Force, 22 drivers were arrested for overcharging passengers, and their vehicles were impounded at the KMA’s headquarters pending further legal action.

Mr. Randy Wilson Wilson, Head of Urban Transport at KMA, says offenders will be fined between GH¢500 and GH¢1,500 before their vehicles are released, under the Assembly’s Special Exercise Fine approved on July 28, 2023.

The task force, which included Department of Transport KMA Metro Guards, Assembly Members, and other security personnel, acted on evidence that these drivers were violating the national transport unions’ directive to reduce transportation fares by 15% on May 24, 2025.

It should be noted that on May 26, 2025, the KMA’s Public Relations Unit issued a public notice warning all commercial drivers to adhere to the revised fares strictly.

The notice stated unequivocally that any driver who fails to charge the approved fare commits a criminal offence punishable under the law.

Mr. Wilson reaffirmed KMA’s commitment to upholding discipline and fairness in the city’s transportation system. He emphasized that the Assembly will continue to enforce its regulations without fear or favour to protect the interests of commuters.

The KMA remains dedicated to promoting order, accountability, and sanity on Kumasi roads.
