The leadership of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has issued an unqualified apology to the Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, for the recent comment made about him.
The General Secretary of GRNMA, Dr. David Tenkorang-Twum, made derogatory and unprintable remarks against the Minister during an interview on Asempa FM’s political talk show, Ekosii Sen.
A statement issued by the Deputy Director and Spokesperson, Tony Goodman, on September 3, 2025, said the GRNMA leadership also discussed with the Minister key issues aimed at strengthening the working relationship between nurses and the government.
The leaders who called on the minister were the former president, Alice Darkoa Asare-Allotey; the immediate past president, Dr. Krobea Asante; the current president, Perpetual Ofori Ampofo; and the general secretary, Dr David Tenkorang-Twum.
The Minister “graciously” accepted the apology and encouraged the Association to prioritise dialogue and constructive engagement with the government.
He reiterated his commitment to fostering a strong partnership with healthcare professionals to improve healthcare delivery nationwide.
Highlighting some achievements of the current administration, Akandoh noted that the government has made significant strides, including the integration of 13,500 nurses into the government payroll, the establishment of the Ghana Medical Training Fund (GMTF), and the retooling of various government health facilities.
He also mentioned the payment of arrears on nursing training allowances and National Health Insurance claims, as well as the government’s absorption of half of the admission fees for nursing training institutions.
The minister pledged to see to the successful implementation of the collective bargaining agreement to improve the condition of service for nurses and to also support the ongoing transformation of the health sector in line with achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
He urged all stakeholders and the general public to remain calm, as the government is committed to resolving challenges within the health sector.
During the meeting, the GRNMA leadership raised several concerns affecting healthcare professionals and nurses, calling for urgent attention to enhance service delivery.
