The government will, from next week, begin the disbursement of 10 million cedis each to four distressed technical universities across the country.

The move is aimed at bridging infrastructure gaps and reviving stalled development projects.

Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu announced the intervention during the inauguration of the Governing Council of the University of Energy and Natural Resources in Accra.

The minister recounted how many technical universities have suffered from serious infrastructure deficits, with some GETFund projects abandoned for over a decade.

He revealed that a total of 400 million cedis has now been secured by the government through GETFund, with 10 million cedis earmarked for immediate disbursement to institutions in urgent need.

Chairman of the Governing Council Dr Nana Agyeman Badu assured the minister of their tireless work to improve the university.

In a related development, Mr. Iddrisu also inaugurated the Governing Council of Bolgatanga Technical University. He charged the council to prioritize programs in agriculture, given the university’s location and regional needs.

He later went on to formally constitute the governing councils of Koforidua Technical University and the University of Environment and Sustainable Development and charged the board to ensure that issues on galamsey are addressed.

The ministry says the move is part of broader efforts to strengthen technical and vocational education, and ensure institutions are well-positioned to contribute to Ghana’s industrial and economic transformation.
