Unions in education say the Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum has no mandate to close down schools for non performance.
The Ghana national association of teachers, GNAT and Coalition of Concerned Teachers have rather asked the Education Mnister to provide resources to the non performing schools.
The Education Minister is reported to have announced at a forum that non performing schools would be closed down.
The General Secretary of GNAT Thomas Musah Tanko cited the education policy document which mandates regional education directors to manage schools.
He explained that in the document the director general has the power to determine a non performing school and report to the GES council.
Then the GES council will advise the sector minister to take action.
He asked the minister of education to rather focus on facilitating the payment of the capitation grants and subventions instead of claiming he will close down non performing schools.
The Communication Director of the Coalition Of Concerned Teachers Adokwei Awulley said the education minister cannot close down non performing school.
