Director General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr Patrick Kumah Aboagye has given assurance the GHS is working hard to close the gap in childhood vaccination created by the recent shortages in vaccines.

He says the country has enough stock of childhood vaccines and the Service is working to ensure all children who missed their vaccination periods are covered.

He was speaking at the launch of the Africa Vaccine Week in Kumasi.

The Africa Vaccine Week was instituted 13 years ago by leaders of the African Union to create more awareness of the importance of childhood vaccinations.

The Day also gives policymakers room to ensure more efforts are made in achieving universal health for all children under five.

Ghana in the latter part of 2022 was short of some childhood vaccines which created some fear in parents.

Speaking to Akoma News on the sidelines of the Launch of the Africa Vaccination Week, the Director General of the GHS emphasised efforts are in place to close the gap created by the shortfall.

According to the GHS, Ghana has made substantial strides in reducing under-five mortality due to vaccination exercises.

Under-five mortality dropped from 111 per 1000 live births in 2003 to 30 in 2022.

Dr Kumah Aboagye noted such strides should be maintained to save the lives of children under five.

World Health Organization Country Director Dr Francis Kasolo indicated the need for current data on supplies of vaccines in Ghana to forestall future occurrences of shortages.

He stressed the need for the public to shun vaccine hesitancy for the improved well-being of all.

The theme for the 2023 Africa Vaccination Week is the Big Catch Up, to reach all children who missed their vaccinations during the peak of Covid-19.
