Free SHS not compromised on quality of education,Dr Yaw Adutwum

The Minister for Education, Hon.Dr.Yaw Adutwum has rejected claims that the government’s Free SHS policy has affected the quality of education at the secondary school level in Ghana.

According to him, such claims are unfounded and should be disregarded completely.

The government has been criticized for introducing the double-track system as a temporary measure to address infrastructural challenges brought on by the implementation of the Free SHS program.

Some have argued that the number of students admitted to the various second-cycle institution without any quota system and the double-track system has also reduced the contact hours for teaching and learning for students, which, in turn, has affected the quality of secondary education.

But he says the government effort in recruiting more teachers and additional infrastructure edifice has disputed the public perception.

He cited the 2022 WASSCE report as evidence of the quality education policy the free SHS has received.

He also announced the introduction of a one-year pre-engineering course for Arts graduates of Senior High School students without a science background who what to pursue engineering courses.

Speaking at the launch of Kumasi High School 60th Anniversary, Dr Adutwum, said the students would be taught physics, chemistry, elective mathematics, technical drawing, and Information and Communication Technology and when successful, they would be admitted to pursue the engineering course of their choice at the Universities.

He said students of Arts who will graduate this year can apply for the 2023/2024 academic year in the various tertiary universities.

He also added, the E-Block schools built by err the previous NDC government have not been abandoned as some section Ghanaians claimed.

Chairman of the Kuhis 60 Anniversary Planning Committee Rev Peter Owusu Mensah said to unearth sports talents for the country, the Anniversary is geared towards the construction of a Sports Complex for the school.
