Information reaching us indicates that two fishing canoes have capsized in the estuary at Kewunor, Ada, in the Ada East District of the Greater Accra Region of Ghana.

The estuary, a spot noted for these disasters, recorded a number of such disasters this year.

Our sources disclosed that one of the canoes was carrying about 10 people while the other was carrying 13 people believed to be returning from night fishing when they were met by strong waves from both the sea and the river, resulting in the disaster.

Reports indicate that two of the victims managed to swim to safety and emerged at Ohuemi, (an island community).

It is still not clear how the others survived.

A resident of Kawunor, the coastal community nearest to the disaster site, Thomas Zormelo aka Sankara told our newsmen that the sea has been very rough making it difficult for other fisherfolks to step in to aid their colleagues.

The survivor, Mr Godwin Gidimatu who also spoke with us narrated his experience to us and said “It happened around 7 am when we were returning from fishing. The sea was so rough that we couldn’t come to the shore.

So we were calculating the steps of the waves. Immediately, the waves overpowered the boat capsizing it instantly. We scattered until we couldn’t see each other any longer.

It took me four hours in the sea before landing on the island community called, Ohuemi. “

A piece of unconfirmed information reaching this site has it that one dead body has been found at Ohuemi while 11 persons are still unaccounted for.

Mr. Ebenezer Dan-Doe, PRO for the Ada East District NADMO who also confirmed the sad incident revealed that a rescue team is in search of the missing persons.
