Authorities of the Ghana water company limited in the central region say activities of illegal miners on the pra river which serves as the raw water seriously affect the quality of water they process due to high turbidity.
One of the company’s distribution plants at Sekyre heman currently can only produce about 17,000 cubic meters instead of 30,000 cubic meters a day because of GALAMSEY a situation which contributes to the perineal water problems in cape coast and parts of the central region.

The Sekyere Hemang water treatment plant was commissioned in 2008 during the john Agyekum Kuffour regime to solve perineal water challenges in the central region.

The treatment plant which supplies water to parts of cape coast, the Komenda Edina Eguafo Abeem municipality and parts of the Abura Asebu Kwamankese district.
The processing and treatment of water have become very difficult because of the quality of the raw water, the pra river has been taken over by illegal miners who do so with all impunity.

According to engineers the plant is facing an operations challenge due to raw water quality and revealed that the usual alum used to treat the water before supply can no longer be used because of the level of pollution and now have to resort to the use of a chemical known polyelectrolyte which is 4 times more expensive.

Central regional chief manager, Seth eric atiapah expressed worry about how illegal mining is causing the utility company’s Sekyre Hemang treatment plant and forced it to produce about 17,000 cubic meters instead of its capacity of 30,000 cubic meters.

He said apart from the quality of the raw water that has been destroyed, the situation caused some destruction to some of the company’s equipment in the treatment process.

As part of the commemoration of 2023 world water day, the regional office opened its facility to some junior and senior high school students for a tour to have first-hand information about the current state of the plant.

The visit took students to where the raw water is linked to the facility and the processes they go through for treatment.

The move according to management is to sensitize and inculcate into them the need to protect and preserve water to ensure its safety with a guide from the sustainable development goal (SDG) 6 which focuses on water safety, and accessibility.

Some of the students sharing their experience at the facility expressed shock and worry about the state of the pra river for water consumption and called on stakeholders to act immediately to save the situation.
