The Bekwai Circuit Court in the Ashanti Region has sentenced a young man, Michael Antwi Boasiako, to 20 years’ imprisonment for his involvement in a violent robbery attack on a tricycle, locally known as a pragya, rider near Wawase.
The conviction followed a successful prosecution by the Bekwai Police, which culminated in the sentence being handed down on January 12, 2026, after the court found Antwi Boasiako guilty of attacking and robbing a tricycle rider.
The incident occurred on August 14, 2025, when Antwi Boasiako and an accomplice, who is currently on the run, hired the complainant, Godfred Tabi, a pragya rider, under the pretext of being transported to Wawase to visit a cottage. During the journey, the two men launched a sudden attack on the rider, restraining him by tying his hands and legs before fastening him to a cocoa tree in a nearby bush.
After overpowering the victim, the attackers made off with his tricycle and fled the scene. Despite the ordeal, Godfred Tabi managed to free his hands, untie himself, and seek assistance from a nearby cottage. He subsequently contacted his elder brother, who quickly mobilized community members to help rescue him.
While the rescue team was on its way, they spotted the stolen Pragya being ridden by unknown persons and attempted to arrest them. One of the suspects managed to escape, but the other was apprehended and restrained by the group.
Police officers later arrived at the scene and took custody of the suspect, who was later identified as Michael Antwi Boasiako. Following thorough investigations, he was arraigned before the Bekwai Circuit Court.
Briefing journalists on the case, the Ashanti South Regional Police Commander, DCOP Joseph Nyaaba, said the court convicted Antwi Boasiako on two counts. He noted that the 20-year custodial sentence imposed by the court will run concurrently.
DCOP Nyaaba commended the swift response of the police and the cooperation of the public, stressing that the police remain committed to dealing decisively with violent crime in the region.
He also appealed to residents to continue providing timely information to assist the police in tracking down the accomplice who remains at large.
