2024 flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama is charging the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) to be “more transparent” in the processes leading to this year’s limited voter registration exercise, starting Tuesday.

The former President urged the EC to also heed numerous calls to extend the exercise to electoral areas.

Mr Mahama made these known on Wednesday, September 6 when he addressed his followers in a Facebook Live session.

He, first of all, urged eligible Ghanaians to visit the registration centers from Tuesday, September 12 to register to vote for the needed change come December 7, 2024.

But he was concerned the EC has failed to heed calls to take the exercise to its electoral offices.

“I wish to add my voice to those who have called on the EC to reconsider its decision to restrict the registration exercise to its district offices only,” he said, emphasizing that this is stipulated by EC’s regulations.

“It is also our very strong recommendation that in line with regulation 22(b) of CI 91, as amended by CI 126, the Commission listens to the call for the extension of the exercise to take place in the electoral areas and not limited to the district offices of the Commission

“This will curb many inconveniences including transportation, lack of money to move from distant locations and access.”

The exercise is scheduled to end on Monday, October 2.

It will be conducted between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. each day.

The exercise was announced by the EC ahead of the district-level and unit committee elections slated for Tuesday, December 19.
