A backlash has erupted within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) following comments by the party’s General Secretary, Fiifi Fiavi Kwatey, regarding calls for a third term for former President John Dramani Mahama.
The controversy stems from remarks Mr. Kwatey made during the 44th Anniversary celebration of the 31st December Movement, founded by the late former President Jerry John Rawlings.
In his address, Mr. Kwatey described NDC supporters who refer to a third Mahama presidency as a “turn” as sycophants and bootlickers of the highest order.
His comments have drawn sharp reactions from some grassroots members of the party, particularly in the Ashanti Region.
One such supporter, identified as Yakubu Tony Aidoo, who openly supports the third-term agenda, has angrily rejected the General Secretary’s remarks, describing them as disrespectful and insulting to the party’s grassroots.
Speaking passionately, Mr. Aidoo claimed he has made significant personal sacrifices for the NDC, including selling his land to support the party.
He insisted that grassroots members are capable of reading and understanding the 1992 Constitution and therefore do not deserve to be spoken down to.
“We are going to read the constitution so that the Ghanaian people will know that we can read and understand the constitution.”
Mr. Aidoo went further to launch a verbal attack on the General Secretary, accusing him of greed, sycophancy, and showing disregard for the efforts of grassroots supporters.
He maintained that he has worked tirelessly for the party and deserves empowerment under an NDC government.
“I support thyou. rty more than you.I brough.”he NDC to power .”
Despite constitutional concerns, Mr. Aidoo reiterated that grassroots supporters will continue to push for what he described as a third term for John Dramani Mahama.
Nevertheless, Ghana’s 1992 Constitution clearly limits a president to two four-year terms, and political analysts have consistently stated that any attempt to extend this limit would be unconstitutional.
Meanwhile, the National Democratic Congress is yet to issue an official response to the comments by its general secretary or the backlash from grassroots susupporters.
