An Appeals Court Judge, Her ladyship Justice Angelina Mensah Homiah has made a clarion call on the Ghana police service to desist from arresting debtors.
She made the call at the launch of the Alternative Dispute resolution (ADR) week at Sunyani.
The ADR week was held at the Sunyani High Court on the theme ” Improving Access to Justice in a Post – Pandemic Through the Use of ADR”.
The rationale behind the ADR Week is to afford the ADR Directorate of the judicial service the opportunity to engage the general public to inform the citizenry of the presence of ADR within the court system, its importance in seeking justice and how to take advantage of such an important process for a meaningful access to justice especially the poor and the vulnerable.
During a question and answer section, the Justice of the court of appeal with the oversight responsibility for the Court Connected ADR (CCADR) Programme of the Judicial Service, Her Ladyship Justice Angelina Mensah Homiah explained that the police do not have the right under civil law to arrest debtors until they are ordered by the court.
She therefore entreated the police to be circumspect in the discharge of their duties.
