The Member of Parliament for Asokwa Constituency, Hon.Patricia Appiagyei, has stated that women’s participation in the just-ended Assembly election has increased compared to the previous elections.

She believes the passage of the affirmative action bill into law will increase women’s chances in politics.

According to her, although the female figures are still low, she is impressed with this year’s number of women who form part of the Assembly.

She made this statement during the inauguration of members of the Asokwa municipal assembly.

18 Assembly members were inaugurated Monday to commence their four-year duty term as Assembly members.

12 were elected to the assembly on December 19 in the district-level elections. Six government appointees, including 60 committee members, were inaugurated to proceed with the business of the Assembly.

Out of the 12 elected members, only one is female, representing the Kyirapatre electoral area.
Out of the six government appointees, three are female.

One person with a disability is among the government appointees.

The Municipal Chief Executive of Asokwa Municipal Assembly, Hon.Akwannuasa Gyimah, says the Assembly has fulfilled the government’s 30 percent quota of women’s participation in the Assembly.

He urged the women to exhibit their potential in the interest of the assembly and their electoral areas.

Assembly Member for Ahinsan Estate Electoral Area, Nana Yaw Wiredu, was elected the Presiding Member for Asokwa.

He contested unopposed and secured 100 percent of the votes.

Nana Yaw Wiredu says the Assembly will make sure development gets to every nook and cranny of the people in the Asokwa municipality.
