17 Suspects, including 7 Chinese nationals, were arrested in the Samreboi anti-galamsey operation

The Ghana Police Service has confirmed the arrest of 17 individuals, including seven Chinese nationals and ten Ghanaians, in connection with illegal mining activities (galamsey) in Samreboi, located in the Western Region.

 

The arrests were made on Saturday, May 25, 2025, by a special Anti-Galamsey Taskforce from the National Police Headquarters as part of intensified efforts to combat illegal mining and its damaging effects on the environment and forest reserves.

 

All 17 suspects were transported to Accra the same day to assist with ongoing investigations.

 


According to a statement released by the police, operations in Samreboi and surrounding areas are being ramped up.

Authorities are now focusing on identifying additional persons of interest and increasing security around affected forest areas to prevent further environmental degradation.

This latest operation underscores the government’s ongoing effort to eradicate galamsey activities, which have long plagued Ghana’s natural ecosystems and threatened water bodies nationwide.
