The wanton destruction of the environment and pollution of water bodies by the activities of illegal miners has become a cause for concern to most Ghanaians due to the rippling effect on the nation.

Whilst the illegal mining activity is posing a threat to food security, a looming water crisis also stares us right in the face should it linger on.

This has enraged some groups who have even called for a total ban on any form of small-scale mining activity.

But the small-scale miners say that will be a lazy approach to tackling the menace.

Godwin Armah is the secretary to the association.

According to the secretary to the association Godwin Armah ,it will be very awful to ban small scale miners who have acquired license to operate under the Minerals and Mining (Amendment) Act, 2019 (Act 995), and the Minerals Commission Act, 1993 (Act 450).

He said ,the regulator (mineral commission)  should have monitored the activities of the miners and apply sanctions to those who are wrecking water bodies and forest reserve.

“we will not accept any ban on scale mining as many Ghanaians proposing”,Godwin Armah disclosed.

The association is proposing a bi-partisan and community enforcement approach to tackling illegal mining.

They called for a collective effort to protect our water bodies and environment.

“let’s all come together to fight against illegal mining to protect our water bodies and the forest”,Godwin Armah stated.

The small-scale miners say they are ready to collaborate with government to implement policies and programs to rid off small-scale mining of illegal activities.
