It is common to see several areas within the Kumasi metropolis inundated with flood anytime there are heavy rains.

This leaves properties destroyed and sometimes claims lives.

It has become an annual ritual.

With few days to the onset of the rains, residents are living in fear which also leads to the breeding of various diseases to people.

These choked gutters pose a serious health threat to the inhabitants as well.

But have city authorities learned any lessons from past flooding incidents and other consequences?

Akoma FM’s Kwame Baffoe Agyekum has been finding out what interventions have been outlined to end the perennial flooding in the metropolis.

A walk at the Central business district and some flood-prone areas in Kumasi revealed, several covered and uncovered gutters have been choked with waste.

This makes the flow of water a difficult task.

Major drainage along the Akwatia line and WAEC enclave have also been heavily choked with plastic waste.

Residents and business owners around the drainage have turned it into a dumping site.

Others also use the same drain as their toilet facility.

This current state of the drainage is posing a serious health threat.

Assemblymember for Asem electoral area, Hon.Serebour Kusi, says assurance from the KMA to clear the waste before the rainy season to avoid flooding is yet to be fulfilled.

Metro head of the Environmental Health and sanitation department, Yaw Ofori explained efforts are being made to empty the Akwatialine drainage and other identified drainage and gutters for the free water flow.

Metro Director of NADMO, Mr Ernest Amoah also noted, his department has collaborated with the assembly to dredge flood-prone gutters within the metro in other to curb flooding

Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly Public Relations Officer Mrs Harrietta Konadu Aboagye says the Assembly has put down some pragmatic measures to dredge most of the choked gutters towards the rainy season.
