The Regional Health Directorate has described the trend as worrying as it tries to reduce the figures going forward.

In 2021, 161 died while giving birth but the figure shot up to 182 in 2022.

According to the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate, eclampsia, postpartum haemorrhage and late referrals to health facilities are major contributory factors to the high deaths.

Ashanti Regional Health Director Dr Emmanuel Tinkorang describes the trend as worrying.

The Health Directorate in an effort to stem the tide of maternal deaths is optimistic some hospitals are yet to be commissioned and operationalized to ease the pressure on KATH and late referrals.

Young doctors are also been trained in specialist obstetrics to offer specialist services at the facilities in the districts.
