The government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving the welfare of police personnel by establishing a Provident Fund Scheme.

The assurance was given by the interior minister, Mubarak Mubarak, during the commissioning of a 50-bed police hospital in Kumasi on Thursday, June 5, 52025. After eleven years of construction, the police hospital in Kumasi has finally seen the light of day.

The facility, funded entirely by the Police Welfare Scheme, is expected to make quality healthcare services readily accessible to personnel.

At the commissioning ceremony, Interior Minister Hon. Muntaka Mubarak praised the Ghana Police Service for its initiative in financing the project without government support.

He pledged the ministry’s full backing to equip and maintain the facility to the highest standards while ensuring adequate staffing for both the Kumasi and Tamale Police Hospitals.

“Let me add that I want to see during my tenure that we scale up the police welfare fund to ensure that the police have a prominent fund. That will see you going back home after retirement, smiling even better than you are doing today.
I implore the Inspector General of Police and the Police Service, in general, to ensure a high maintenance quota to keep this edifice in shape and to safeguard the well-being of personnel.”

The hospital, located at the Patasi Police Training School, features critical medical units, a children’s block, and surgical theaters. It will serve not only police personnel but also the general public, easing healthcare access in the region.

Director-General of Welfare of the Ghana Police Service, COP Iddi Lansa Seidu, revealed that this is the second police hospital fully funded by the Police Welfare Scheme, with a 100-bed facility in Tamale nearing completion.

“But today we have a second police hospital being built here in Kumasi. In the year 2015, the then Asante Regional Police Commander, Commissioner of Police (COP) Mr. Nathan Kofi Boakye (rtd.), commenced the construction of the Kumasi Police Hospital. However, the project came to a standstill at the foundation level due to some challenges.

In the year 2020, the STEM Committee of the Police Welfare Scheme overwhelmingly endorsed the construction of the 50-bed capacity hospital brought before it by the then Director General of Criminal Welfare, COP Mrs. Maame Yaa Tiwah Addo Dankwa. After she had secured approval from the then-police administration, in which our current IGP was actively involved, the entire project from foundation level to finishing some equipment and setting up the ART ambulance was funded by the Police Welfare Scheme. Very soon, the Kamale Police Hospital in the northern region, a 100-bed capacity hospital, will also come on stream.”

Ashanti Regional Police Commander DCOP Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe highlighted the operational benefits of the new hospital, particularly in handling suspects requiring medical attention, a process that previously posed security and logistical challenges.

“The establishment of this hospital will also significantly reduce the challenges associated with taking suspects to external medical facilities, often under armed guard, where the process can pose inconveniences to medical staff, other patients, and police operational duties. With this new facility, we can now admit and manage such cases directly. Enhancing both our operational efficiency and access to timely medical care.

It is in this regard that I wish to sincerely thank the Police Administration, especially the Police Welfare Directorate, for this remarkable initiative. Your commitment to improving the working conditions and the well-being of police personnel is not only commendable but deeply, deeply appreciated. We are again truly honored by your presence as we officially commission this magnificent edifice dedicated to quality healthcare delivery and enhanced welfare support.”

The Kumasi Police Hospital, initiated in 2015 by former Regional Commander COP (Rtd.) Nathan Kofi Boakye, stands as a milestone in police welfare and public healthcare infrastructure.
