Three young men have died in a mining accident at Tarkwa, a mining community near Gbane in the Tongo District of the Upper East Region.
The incident occurred on the night of February 16, 2026, when a loose slab of rock reportedly collapsed on the victims while they were working underground, killing them instantly.
Police say they received a distress call at about 10:30 p.m. from a resident of Datoko, reporting the accident.
Officers who rushed to the scene found that some youth had already entered the mining pit and retrieved the bodies, which were being kept in sacks.
The owner of the pit, identified as Tii Musah, confirmed to police that the deceased were his workers. They have been named as Subil Nmabil, aged about 30; Musah Zipati, aged about 40; and Onyin Udasaa, aged about 35.
A preliminary examination revealed that one of the victims suffered a deep cut to the ribs, another sustained multiple head injuries, while the third had a smashed right hand.
The bodies were transported to the Regional Hospital in Bolgatanga, where a medical officer pronounced them dead.
They have since been deposited at the hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
