President John Dramani Mahama has revealed Ghana’s intention to partner with the Portuguese government in efforts to revive a national airline, marking a renewed push to strengthen the country’s aviation and economic sectors.

He made the comments at a ceremony held at the Jubilee House on Thursday, July 10, during which he received letters of credence from five newly accredited ambassadors, including Maria Da Conceição de Sousa Pilar, the new Portuguese envoy to Ghana.

Other ambassadors presenting their credentials were from Seychelles, Venezuela, Chad, and Gabon.

Speaking during his interaction with the Portuguese ambassador, President Mahama highlighted the significance of deepening bilateral ties with Portugal, especially in the areas of aviation, trade, and foreign direct investment.

“We appreciate the fact that the Portuguese national airline flies directly to Accra,” President Mahama said.

“Ghana itself is trying to reestablish its national airline. At the appropriate time, we will be looking for partners, and if the Portuguese national airline is interested, we could do a partnership.”

The president’s remarks come amid broader efforts by the government to strengthen Ghana’s transport and logistics infrastructure while creating new avenues for job creation and economic expansion.

President Mahama also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to fostering robust economic relations with Portugal and other global partners, pointing to Ghana’s potential as an investment destination.

“We want to expand economic relations, and we believe that we can attract more investors to come and invest in Ghana. Ghana has a lot of natural resources, with a market size of almost 35 million people,” he added.

The presentation of credentials marks the formal start of diplomatic assignments for the newly appointed ambassadors, who are expected to promote stronger cooperation between their home countries and Ghana in various sectors.
