An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced Evangelist Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, to 15 years in jail for charlatanic advertisement and defrauding by pretense.
The judge, Evelyn Asamoah, said she skillfully executed the offenses and did not show remorse.
The Accra Circuit Court on Thursday, July 3, convicted Nana Agradaa on charges of charlatanic advertisement and defrauding by false pretences.
The founder of Heaven Way Church was arrested on October 9, 2022, after allegations from some church members that she had defrauded them during an overnight church service.
The court presided over by Evelyn Asamoah convicted Agradaa and ordered a pregnancy test to be carried out on her before sentencing.
The prosecution, however, disagrees; they note that Agradaa was convicted of a GHC10,000 fine on similar charges in 2021, and because it wasn’t deterrent enough, she went right back.
“We want a sentence that will send shivers down the spine of like-minded persons,” the prosecutor adds in his closing remarks.
Lawyers of Agradaa argued for a noncustodial sentence, citing that she has a 24-year-old daughter reading law at the university and a 3-year-old child whose life will be shattered if she’s sent to jail.
They also claim she has positively impacted several people, seeing that she leads a congregation that relies on her for their livelihoods.
