The government has begun the evacuation and distribution of stored food items to affected schools by close of work today.
It follows President John Dramani Mahama’s directive to the Chief of Staff and the Ghana Education Service.
A government delegation led by Dr. Clement Apaak and Peter Nortsu-Kotoe with officers from the Ministries of Education and Agriculture are embarked on a tour of the warehouses in Tema after which the distribution will started
Last week there was public outcry about the lack of food in secondary schools to feed the SHS students who had reopened.
Conference of Heads of Assisted Seconday Schools asked parents to give their wards enough food and money to feed themselves as there were no food in the schools.
President John Dramani Mahama immediately disclosed the evacuation and distribution of some stored food items at the National Warehouse to the schools in order for the academic calender not to be affected.
Dr. Clement Apaak among other things says going forward, the food distribution to schools will be decentralized.
According to Dr Clement Apaak ,Buffer Stock and Food Suppliers will cease to supply food.
“What it means is that funds for procurement of food items will go straight to school heads”,he said.
The distribution began in Accra yesterday Wednesday and is expected to continue today, Thursday, January 16, 2025.
139,872 bags of rice to be supplied to all public Senior High Schools across the country to be used for one month.
