14 people, including a toddler and two other minors, have been confirmed dead after their vehicle veered off the road and landed in a river at Kwapia on the Akrokerri-Obuasi road in the Ashanti region.

The unfortunate incident which occurred on Sunday evening, has left residents frightened.

49 passengers were on board the VIP bus travelling from Kumasi to Samreboi. 11 died on the spot and 3 more lives were lost at the hospital.

This is the second major road accident in the Ashanti region in just three days. The first one occurred on Friday, October 11 at Atwedie on the Kumasi-Accra road, claiming seven lives.

Over two thousand lives have already been lost, nationwide, within the first half of the year. The growing fatalities on the country’s major road has become a huge concern for many.

Out of the eight passengers who were sent to the Obuasi government hospital for treatment, six have been discharged, while 2 remain on admission but in stable condition.

Bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the hospital’s morgue for identification. Stakeholders say it is time drastic measures are put in place to prevent some of these avoidable accidents and deaths.
