The Ghana Immigration Service has arrested a Chinese National and a Ghanaian for possession of arms and attempting to evade immigration officials.

The arrest occurred at the Paga border post when the Chinese national and his Ghanaian accomplice, travelling in a registered Burkina Faso vehicle, attempted to evade the immigration officials.

A statement released by the GIS on July 11 said the two, upon seeing the immigration officials at the border post, sped off and were chased by two Immigration officials on duty, which led to their arrest and subsequent interception of the arms.

A further search conducted by the officials on the vehicle led to the retrieval of two Chinese pump action guns, eleven packs of body armour bags, two jack knives, and fifteen electronic gold scales.

Other items retrieved included three phones, one pack of suspected gold ore, and huge sums of cash in cedi notes, dollars, and CFA notes.

Zhou Quan and Awato Kwame have been handed over to the police for further investigation.

In light of this recent development, the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kwame Asuah Takyi, has directed all commanders to tighten security at the country’s borders and beef up patrols at all unapproved routes.

This ensures that illegal entries are brought down to the barest minimum.
