Over 17k new HIV infections recorded in 2023 – Ghana AIDS Commission.

Seventeen thousand, seven hundred and seventy-four (17, 774) new HIV infections were reported in the country in 2023.

This represents a 14.8% decrease in HIV infection in the last decade.

In the same year, 12,480 people living with the infection died, with 11.2% of the number being children.

 

Bono, Greater Accra and Eastern Region remain the regions with the highest prevalence.

The Director-General of the Ghana AIDS Commission, Dr. Kyeremeh, expressed concerns at the Dissemination of the 2023 National and Sub-National HIV Estimates and projections in Accra about how persons between the ages of 15 and 49, who are economically active, represent the bulk of infections.

Fifty people are infected every day, per the estimation, while more than 218 thousand people who are infected do not know their status.

 

Currently, there are more than 152 thousand people on ART medication, 36 thousand male adults and 109k female adults, while 5k are children.

 

In the same vein, more than 87k people on medication attained viral suppression in 2023.

 

The Commission and its partners aim to achieve an epidemic-free country by 2030.
