A professor with the University of Ghana has been robbed at Dixcove, a community in the Ahanta West municipality of the Western region, with two police officers sustaining serious injuries in an attempt to arrest the suspects.

The Assemblymember of Upper Dixcove, Joana Koomson, who narrated the incident to our sister station Connect FM in Accra, indicated the professor was in the community with some students to conduct research.

She adds that the entire community was plunged into darkness on Valentine’s Day, and while the professor and his students were outside enjoying some fresh air to avoid the heat, armed robbers besieged the place they were lodging, cut through the window, and entered the room.

“He is in the community with his students for research work. On Valentine’s Day, they were outside enjoying fresh air when the robbers attacked him. They cut through his window and entered his room, they were able to steal his laptop, phones, GHC 2,000, and other personal belongings.

They also destroyed other belongings in the room and left,” she indicated.

According to the Assemblywoman, they informed the police, who quickly detailed some cops to the scene, and in an attempt to arrest the suspects, two of the cops, including a CID officer, were attacked with stones and cudgels, leading to serious injuries.

One of the police officers was injured by the robbers.

“We informed the police, and they came around immediately to ensure the suspects were arrested. They have so far arrested two of them from Lower Dixcove, and the laptop has since been retrieved. About five of them have bolted from the community,” she added

According to her, the only major commercial activity for community members is fishing. However, due to a premix shortage, most people have remained jobless.

She believes the situation is causing many of the young guys in the community to rely on hard drugs and the formation of ghettos to rob innocent people.

It would be recalled that a medical doctor stationed at the Dixcove Government Hospital was also robbed of his bungalow in 2023.

Traditional authorities at Upper Dixcove have expressed disappointment about the growing incidence of robbery in the community. They are urging the police to act swiftly to ensure safety in the community, saying if this continues, it could even affect tourism in the town, which has Fort Metal Cross, which attracts hundreds of tourists daily.
