The Seventh-day Adventist Church (SDA) is asking the Electoral Commission to change the election date of December 7, 2024, which falls on a Saturday, to a date that would not conflict with the Sabbath, the holy day dedicated to God.
They have, therefore, in a separate petition first to the Commission, asked that an amendment be made in the elections to that effect.
It is asking the Commission to consider the first or second Tuesday of November for the exercise for purposes of convenience and inclusive democracy.
“In anticipation of changing the date for general elections from December 7 to the first (1st) or second (2nd) Tuesday of November, the leadership of the Seventh-day Adventist Church met with the Electoral Commission (EC) on Wednesday, June 7, 2023.
“The Church proposed to the EC a change from the December 7 date to the 1st or 2nd Tuesday of November in a general elections’ year.”
The Director of Public Affairs and Religious Liberty at the Seventh-day Adventist Church Southern Ghana Union Conference, Dr. Solace Asafo, says the church hopes the elections will not conflict with any religious day in the country.
Meanwhile, the church is taking additional steps by sending another petition to the Attorney General and pushing for an amendment of the constitutional provisions that restrict the period for organizing parliamentary and presidential elections in Ghana.
The SDA Church in Ghana is believed to have an adult population of about 400,000.
