Although Article 13 of the Constitution of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) requires that the running mate to the flag bearer for a major election where the candidate is not the sitting president be announced 12 months before the poll, that of 2024 has been postponed.

This was after Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the 2024 flag bearer of the party, asked for more time to conclude his choice.

The party leadership had a meeting today, Wednesday, December 6, 2023, to finalize the possible candidates being considered for the position.

But at a press conference after the meeting, General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong announced that the Vice President has asked for more time, which has been granted by the National Council.

Tomorrow, December 7, 2023, marks exactly 12 months since the election in 2024.

The Vice President, who is the NPP’s flag bearer, says he needs further consultations to arrive at a candidate to partner with him for the 2024 polls.

According to Mr. Kodua, the Council has granted this request and is looking forward to a new date from the flag bearer.

Meanwhile, the Council has varied the date for the conduct of primaries in constituencies with sitting MPs.

The election will now be held on the 27th of January and not the 20th of January, 2024.

In the meantime, campaign activities have been suspended in these constituencies until the 2024 budget is approved.
