The Military Taskforce in Bawku in the Upper East Region on Saturday arrested 5 persons in connection with the latest gun attack on some residents in the Bawku township.
The suspects on Saturday afternoon shot into a crowd of people who were going about their normal business activities killing one and injuring three.
The injured persons were rushed to the Bawku Presbyterian Hospital and are currently responding to treatment.
An m16 rifle was retrieved from one of the suspects. They are 52-year-old Alhssan Abu, a Dagomba, 22-year-old Salam Arafat, a Busanga, 16-year-old Kasum Jamal, a Moshie and 31-year-old Issah Mohamed Nasiru.
This unfortunate incident happened just a few weeks after the military task force led by Col. Awuah Antwi Darkwaa, the Commanding Officer in charge of operations in Bawku called on both factions in the prolonged conflict in Bawku – the Mamprusis and the Kusaasis to put down the guns and come together as one to ensure peace returns to the area.
The military in their effort of ensuring peace, engaged both Kusaasi and Mamprusis youth and opinion leaders as well as students of second-cycle institutions in the Bawku Municipality.
After these engagements which were supported by other security agencies and the media, there was relative peace in the municipality which many hoped will last forever until Saturday, 12th August, 2023, when the arrested individuals allegedly took the law into their own hands and disturbed the relative peace enjoyed in the area for the past few weeks.
There was high tension in the area after this heinous act was committed but calm has since been restored in the municipality.
