The speaker of parliament Alban Bagbin has called on Ghanaians to be guided by the transition of Ghana’s democratic system and the role of parliament in the peace the country enjoys through its operations.
He was worried about the distortions in the history of Ghana especially the debate about who the founder of Ghana is and said that could have dire consequences for the country if not checked.
The speaker observed a courtesy call on the Omanhen of Oguaa at the emintsimadze palace in cape coast.
The speaker’s visit to the Emintsimadze palace was the first of its kind by a sitting speaker and also forms part of the 30th anniversary of the parliamentary service of Ghana.
Accompanied by some members of parliament from the central region including the minority leader, Alban Bagbin called on the citizenry to have a relook at the foundation of the governance system and urged Ghanaians to embrace all-inclusive governance where traditional leaders play key and are accorded the needed respect.
He urged Ghanaians to come together to build a nation that seeks to drive development with unity by considering an amendment to the constitution.
Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II in their speech commended the speaker for his leadership role throughout his services in-house and underscored the need for Ghanaians to believe in themselves and bring the best of ideas to develop the country and not depend on the western countries.
He also urged Ghanaians to prioritize the local dialect as a major tool for the upbringing of the younger generation.
Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II also appealed to the speaker to immediately force the relevant stakeholders entrusted with the management of cape coast and Elmina Castle to make the Oguaa and Edina traditional council beneficiaries of the proceeds from the tourist sites.
The minority leader Castley Ato Forson, adding on his part, emphasized the need for Ghanaians to uphold democracy and make the constitution work for the good of the country.
He further called on Ghanaians to also help make meaningful amendments to the constitution.to enhance the democracy of the nation.
