The Deputy Minister of Education in charge of TVET Hon. Gifty Twum-Ampofo has revealed that the ministry is considering the commencement of posting qualified licensed psychologists to all public senior and junior high schools in Ghana to help address and mitigate some physiological issues affecting students.
Reacting to the rising cases of students indiscipline in some public senior high schools particularly the recent bullying incident at Adisadel College by a colleague student, Hon. Gifty Twum-Ampofo admitted that even though the government through the Ministry of Education has achieved a significant milestone in education, it is imperative to help address the challenges the students go through regarding their psychological wellbeing.
The Deputy Education Minister further emphasized that as a result of globalization and digitalization, the challenges of the current generation of children are not ordinary and go beyond the teacher hence the need for the ministry to act swiftly to collaborate with the right institutions to commence the posting of professional psychologists with licences to the various public schools.
According to her the Ministry of Education has requested financial clearance from the Finance Ministry and waiting for approval to commence the recruitment and posting of Professional psychologists to public schools.
Hon. Gifty Twum-Ampofo made the disclosure during the 5th Annual Consultation on Education by the Presbyterian Church of Ghana – Department of Education held in Koforidua in the Eastern Region on the theme ” Reflecting the Light of Christ in PCG Institutions: The Role of Educational Administrators”
The Moderator of Presbyterian Church of Ghana Rt. Rev. Prof. Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mante condemned the act but urged the public to desist from accusing and condemning the school authorities since it might happen at the blind sight of the headteacher or the teacher and moreover, this is not usually an occurrence in the school.
The Moderator however urged parents to desist from harassing or attacking teachers whenever teachers attempt to instill discipline in their wards in school.
According to the Moderator training children requires both discipline and pampering to become better in future therefore parents should not overlook disciplining their children when they go wrong.
