About 300 health professionals in the Ashanti region are reported to have left for abroad in the first quarter of 2023 to seek greener pastures.

Dr Emmanuel Tenkorang, the Ashanti Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), expressed his deep concern about the situation.

He revealed that their analysis in the first quarter of the year indicated that approximately 304 staff members had requested leave without pay, effectively leaving their positions.
Disturbingly, the data further revealed that most of these skilled and experienced professionals had departed the country in search of better opportunities elsewhere.

The departure of such knowledgeable and talented individuals from the healthcare sector is undoubtedly a cause for concern.

Dr Tenkorang emphasized that while the government is actively investing in health infrastructure, there is a looming risk of a shortage of human resources to deliver essential medical services.

The situation is undeniably worrying, as a lack of qualified personnel can hamper the quality and efficiency of healthcare provision in Ghana.

To mitigate the impact of this crisis, Dr Tenkorang disclosed that active recruitment efforts have been undertaken in the Ashanti Region.
“Over 500 new healthcare professionals have been hired to fill the void left by those who have departed, he said.

However, it is crucial for the existing health personnel to recognize the importance of their role and demonstrate patriotism by remaining in the country to serve their fellow citizens.

Dr Tenkorang’s then called for patriotism and appeal to the healthcare professionals to consider the needs of the people they serve.
