1,252 pregnancies were reported in the Upper East Region in the first quarter of 2023.

The Upper East Regional Adolescent Health Focal Person, Miss Dora Kulariba has disclosed a breakdown of teenage pregnancies recorded in the region for the first quarter from January to March of the year 2023.

She made the breakdown known at a review meeting on the essential services package for survivors of Sexual and Gender-Based violence (SGBV) held in Bolgatanga by the Department of Gender with funding support from the United Nations Population Fund.
According to Miss Dora Kulariba, the Upper East Region recorded 1,252 pregnancies in the first quarter of the year.
Providing a breakdown per the various Districts in the Region, Miss Kulariba said Bawku West led the chart with 177 followed closely by another mining area, Talensi District which recorded 120.

Bolgatanga and the Bongo Districts recorded 113 teenage pregnancies each whiles Kassena Nankana West recorded 94.

Bawku Municipal recorded 89, Pusiga District recorded 78, Garu 76, Tempane 71, Kassena-Nankana Municipal 68, Nabdam recorded 65, and Binduri 63.

Others including Builsa South recorded 50, Buisa North 43 while the Bolgatanga East District recorded the lowest with 32.

The numbers recorded for the first quarter of 2023 are a reduction compared to the numbers recorded in 2022 and 2021.

Miss Kulriba noted that most of the teenage girls who got pregnant had been identified to be anaemic due to nutritional imbalances and called for stronger partnerships to end teenage pregnancy.
