The toilet facility at the Ghana Senior High School (Ghanasco), a coed second-cycle institution in Tamale, Northern Region of Ghana, has been converted into a dormitory.
Reporting from the school, media said the students who sleep on the water closet toilet keep their trunks, chop boxes, and others items in the toilet where they also sleep.
Some of the students who spoke claimed that a lack of space in the school had forced them to sleep in the lavatory.
Aside from that, the students are also engaging in open defecation due to the lack of access to enough toilet facilities.
The Ghana Education Service has commenced investigations into a viral video showing some students of the Ghana Senior High School using toilet cubicles as dormitories.
The GES has directed that the Headmaster and the Senior Housemaster of the School step aside to allow for investigations.
Meanwhile, management and the old students association of Ghana Senior High School in Tamale have denied converting some toilet facilities into accommodation for students.
According to them, the said toilet facility has not been in use since the construction of the dormitory block and the students only keep their chop boxes and other items there during vacation.
The Northern Regional Minister Alhaji Alhassan Shaani Shaibu who was in the school together with some old students and other stakeholders of the school said the video that went viral was staged.
