School Feeding Caterers’ decision to suspend their services until their demands were met by the government has revealed absenteeism and low attendance in some basic Schools in the Kumasi Metropolis.

The Caterers refused to feed pupils with one hot meal a day since schools reopened three weeks ago for their second term academic work.

The withdrawal of service is over the delay in the payment of feeding grants for the third term and called for an increment of the grant from 0.97 % to three Ghana Cedis (GH₵3.00) per child.

Some teachers at some Primary Schools in Kumasi, who wanted to be anonymous, said the school attendance had reduced drastically since School reopened this month. From Oforikrom M/A School which has 300 pupils, it has been reduced from 300 pupils to 200 pupils as of Monday, April 17, 2023, due to the strike.

They appealed to the government to heed the demands of the Caterers for payment of their feeding arrears and increase the feeding grant to at least GH₵3.00 per child.

The strike affected attendance as the enrollment of pupils dropped drastically at the various schools visited.

The School Feeding Programme which started in 2005, aimed at increasing school enrolment and encouraged punctuality among pupils as well as enabling them to concentrate in class.

Those who have money were seen eating from outside after break and those without money were standing in groups.

As a move to prevent the KG from absenting themselves, authorities at Oforikrom M/A prepare something for them from their own pickets.

Some of the pupils who spoke to our news team confirmed that some of their colleagues are not coming because of the suspension of the school feeding programme.
