To prevent road crashes in the upcoming Easter, the Ghana Road Transport Union [GPRTU]and other road transport unions as well as officials from the National Road Safety Authority say they will embark on pre-departure checks of their members or drivers.

The move according to them is to help reduce crashes on our roads during Easter.

According to the Transport unions, this development has become necessary due to recent crashes involving small buses and big buses on our roads.

Selected guards would check drivers and conditions of vehicles of members before allowing passengers on board, as part of measures to ensure road regulations compliance.

Drivers are also to have a book to list passengers on board with their details to check their locations when moving to their various destinations.

According to the unions, whoever does not comply with the safety measures will answer the union, and will be directed to the police.

At a meeting with all the transport unions in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the GPRTU, Sumaila Boakye, described Easter as a moment where the “enemy“ was `road traffic crashes`.

Mr Boakye, who was reacting to the rising spate of road crashes in some parts of the country, particularly the Ashanti region, pointed out that, if care was not taken, the situation could escalate.

He said the increasing trend of road traffic accidents resulting in high fatalities and injuries was becoming frightening and a real challenge for all concerned agencies.

The Ashanti Regional Director of the National Road Safety Authority, Alexander Ayatah, called on all to support road safety education.
