G/R: FAITH BASED ORGANIZATIONS DEMAND IMMEDIATE BAN ON SMALL SCALE MINING

The various religious leaders made up of faith based organisations and religious bodies has asked the government to immediately place a ban on all forms of small scale mining activities whether licensed or not.

According to them,visiting galamsey sites, the clergy  believe that there’s the need for government to expedite actions to clamp down on illegal activities to help protect forest reserves, farm lands and water bodies.

They have given an ultimatum to MMDCE’S especially those in the mining communities to reclaim the destroyed lands and ensure that the water bodies are clean by June 30, 2023.

They added, the government should prosecute MMDCE’S and chiefs who are involving in the illegal mining.

They also charged the religious leaders to use their pulpit to preach against the menace and henceforth wear red bands to show their solidarity to the fight against illegal mining in the country and also declared week of fasting and prayers.

They made this statement at the press conference after visiting some galamsey sites in the country to witness devastation of water bodies and forest reserve.
